Better than drawing characters one by one

When you meet an unknown character, the usual fix is a handwriting keyboard: draw it stroke by stroke and pick from a list. That's fine for one character but painful for a whole page, and if you don't know the stroke order the keyboard often can't find it. Here you photograph the full page and get every character at once.

Simplified and Traditional, kept as written

The tool doesn't convert between scripts. A note written in Traditional characters (as used in Taiwan and Hong Kong) stays Traditional, and Simplified stays Simplified. That keeps names and quotations accurate. Punctuation comes out full-width (,。、「」) the way Chinese text should be typed.

    Running script and messy handwriting

Everyday handwriting is rarely neat 楷书. Most people write a semi-cursive 行书 where strokes join and components get abbreviated. The model reads characters in the context of the words around them, which is how it can tell 己, 已 and 巳 apart, or 未 from 末, when the strokes alone are ambiguous.

    Frequently asked questions

    Does it add pinyin?

No, it outputs the characters only. Paste them into a dictionary such as Pleco or MDBG for pinyin and meanings.

Can it read Traditional Chinese handwriting?

Yes. Traditional and Simplified are both supported, and the output stays in whichever form was written.

    Can it read calligraphy?

Regular and running script work well. Highly stylised grass script (草书) is often hard even for native readers, so expect several [?] marks.

Is there a Chinese-language version of this page?

Yes, the same tool in Chinese is at /zh/shouxie-zhuan-wenzi.

    Is it free?
